The Aerospace Industry

The aerospace industry has been growing rapidly since the flight of the Wright brothers in 1903. In the United States, the aerospace industry consists of both public and private organizations. This structure is similar to the aerospace industries in other countries around the world.

In the United States, the space program NASA is one of the most well-known government organizations of the aerospace industry. Other countries and their comparable aerospace industry organizations include:
  • Canadian Space Agency in Canada
  • China National Space Administration in China
  • ESA in Europe
  • Indian Space Research Organisation in India
  • RKA in Russia
  • SUPARCO in Pakistan.

Large private companies in the U.S. aerospace industry include:

  • Boeing
  • Lockheed Martin
  • Northrop Grumman.
This is by no means an all-inclusive list. As the aerospace industry continues to grow, so too will the number of companies across the country in the industry.

The aerospace industry is a blanket term that covers aerospace engineering, aerospace technology, aerospace manufacturing (missiles, engines, aircrafts and more) and even the B2B aerospace industry (business-to-business aerospace industry). Aviation, satellites, spaceship building and aircraft building are also covered by a number of companies in the aerospace industry.

The aerospace industry in the United States is represented by The Aerospace Industries Association. AIA includes manufacturers and suppliers of:
  • aircraft engines
  • civil, military, and business aircraft
  • equipment
  • helicopters
  • information technology
  • missiles
  • services
  • space systems
  • unmanned aerial vehicles.
The aerospace industry consists of hundreds of thousands of employees in this country alone.

In this section, we'll discuss all aspects of the aerospace industry, including aerospace engineering, aeronautics, the Space Launch Initiative, major aerospace players and space exploration.

Aerospace Engineering

As the name suggests, aerospace engineering is engineering that is concerned with aircraft and spacecraft and surrounding areas of interest.

Some of the primary areas of concern in aerospace engineering include:
  • aerodynamics
  • avionics
  • materials science
  • propulsion.
Teams of engineers generally specialize in specific areas of aerospace engineering and combine efforts on projects because of the complexity in the different branches of aerospace engineering.

Space Launch Initiative (SLI)

Formed by NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense, the Space Launch Initiative (SLI) was a program designed to research the requirement of certain technology. Specifically, SLI focused on:
  • hypersonics
  • space launch
  • space technology.
Safety and reducing costs were at the forefront of SLI's goals, along with increasing reliability of U.S. space vehicles. NASA is now focusing on the Constellation Program instead of the Space Launch Initiative.

Major Aerospace Players

There are a number of major players in the aerospace industry. The most well-known include:
  • Boeing
  • Honeywell International
  • Lockheed Martin Corporation
  • Northrop Grumman Corporation
  • Raytheon Company
  • United Technologies Corporation.
This is by no means all of the major players in the aerospace industry. Companies across the United States contribute to the aerospace industry in a number of ways. Many new aerospace technologies and methods originate with the major aerospace players.
